2014 NASCAR SEASON OVER – NOW WHAT?

The 2014 NASCAR races finished in grand fashion with Kevin Harvick as the 2014 Sprint Cup Series Champion.  With the season over, now what?

Many of you living in areas with colder temperatures may be heading south or have already winterized your RV.  This is a great time to make a list of those items needed to be fixed, modified or scheduled for maintenance.  It makes no sense in scrambling around last minute to make costly maintenance, or repairs, that ruin your trip to next year’s NASCAR races.

If your RV requires service that must be completed by an "authorized dealer" - schedule those appointments early!  Depending on the time of year, you may find some service centers are so busy, that getting an appointment could take over a month just for routine service.

For the snow birds heading south or even west - this is a great time to look at the 2015 NASCAR racing schedule to include one (or more) of those races in your trip. Don’t wait to purchase tickets for your infield camping spots or race tickets.  Despite rumors of lowered attendance, tracks located in the "fairer weather" locations often sell out of their reserved RV camp sites quickly.  Some tracks may offer less expensive outside unreserved camp sites or you can choose a nearby campground so you are near the track if you find either unavailable.

Tent campers can do the same thing.  With many tracks experiencing rain, even snow, in 2014 don’t be discouraged from attending next year’s races.  Look to replace or upgrade any gear that may have caused you issues with staying warm and/or dry so your next infield tent camping experience is even better.  With upcoming holiday sales, this is a great time of year to make those types of purchases.

If you're over the tent camping thing - check out "Craig’s List" or other classified ads of those unlucky fans unable to attend next year's races.  You might be able to find a bus, camper or RV at a reasonable cost.

You can find many Buses/RV/Trailers "For Sale" on
Craig's List or other classified web sites.

SO, LET’S TALK CHASE

I don’t get the very personal social media attacks on others (and their mothers) for simply stating something as innocent as who their favorite driver is?  But since NASCAR introduced the new Chase Format, lord help you if you have an opinion on it.

So, let’s talk about NASCAR’s “New” Chase Format

NASCAR like any sport is always trying to come up with ways to make the sport more interesting to watch, less complicated to follow and sustain a larger audience until the final race of each season.

All this while making a profit.

The old “Points Format” that was used to crown a Champion – well – it was simple, drivers and teams had to race/perform consistently over an entire season and they earned points during each race.

Hamlin taking the track for final practice.
Towards the end of each season when it became evident many weeks out that their favorite driver had NO shot at winning the coveted championship.  These fans had no incentive or interest in purchasing tickets to follow the soon-to-be crowned Champion to the end of the season.

So fans complained and NASCAR listened, right?  NO.  NASCAR took a huge hit during the latest recession.  People were losing their homes, jobs and filing bankruptcy just to make it through.  People’s expendable incomes to spend on races and infield camping took a HUGE hit.  Tracks were taking out entire sections of grandstands to reduce track and maintenance costs.  NASCAR was in trouble, not because they kept changing the rules and pissing fans off, but because their fans were in serious financial trouble.

No longer able to fill the grandstands, NASCAR created the “NEW” Chase Format!

IMO, The new “Playoff” style format was a brilliant NASCAR marketing strategy because of the attention it now brings every week to the sport and how it keeps more fans watching until that very last race of the season!  Why?

Instead of having only ONE #DriverNation interested in the final race, you now have FOUR #DriverNations hoping their driver can pull out a championship and 39 other #DriverNations watching just to see if the “Chasers” will crash each other out of spite.
Jeff Gordon and team will have to try again in 2015

It’s always been about the money….always will.  Whether your favorite driver made it or not, there are more fans talking NASCAR and chase format than ever before.  Good Job NASCAR!

Which format do you really think can sell more tickets?  Share your "Opinion" of the NASCAR Chase format here.

NASCAR Camping Things to Do – “The Pit Pass”

You’re camping the infield, getting your party on – GREAT - but make sure you make time for another NASCAR camping things to do while you’re at the track (at least once) by purchasing a pit pass to be up close and personal to pit road activities.

Unless you are extremely hung over from the night before, nothing beats the roar of engines and the smell of rubber than being right next to these cars as they go to and from the track during practice and qualifying sessions.

As a bonus you’ll be close to “autograph row” where you might get that quick picture and possibly an autograph with your favorite drivers and crews. Please Be polite and remember they are working, they respond to ass holes just like you and I do - by being ass holes back.  Don’t be “that guy” who ruins someone else’s dream of meeting their favorite drive.

If you’re camping with a group, make arrangements to split the cost to purchase one or two pit passes to share with those in your party that want to include a trip to pit road during race weekend.

Check your favorite tracks websites or Facebook pages for pit pass pricing and check for additional contests that may offer opportunities to be selected for Pace Car Hot Laps, Garage Access, VIP Packages, private driver Q & A sessions or pre-race driver meetings and introductions to enhance your infield camping race experience.

Long time infield campers and season ticket holders are often rewarded with discounted pit pass tickets when pre-purchased and some tracks may even offer additional incentives by renewing tickets and camp sites early.

With that said, wear comfortable shoes, hat/visor, pack plenty of water and sun screen, your Sharpie, and make sure your camera is fully charged as it’s a NASCAR Camping Things to Do you’ll want to share and remember.

Have fun and share your “Pit Pass” photos and stories here.

NASCAR Camping Things to Do - "The Sprint Experience!"

Interactive displays enhance your experience.
© Photos by Paul Wilkinson
When you head out to camp the infield at your favorite NASCAR track, you will have packed all the food, drinks and "entertainment" that you will need to get through the race weekend.

However, one of the best NASCAR camping things to do is to head over to the main concourse “Fan Zone” and check out the “Sprint Experience”!

The “Sprint Experience” offers many interactive - hands on displays, games and contests throughout the weekend.  You could be selected to participate in a NASCAR Sprint Cup racing car tire changing contest.  Select your favorite driver and race against your friends in the video game racing challenge.

Get a chance to meet your favorite "Miss Sprint Cup".

Meet and have your pictures taken with the “Miss Sprint Cup” models or even the Sprint Cup Championship trophy as it spins in its case.  One (or more) of your favorite drivers may make a special appearance for an up close and personal questions and answers session.

Don’t be fooled though.  There WILL be gimmicks and trickery.  Sprint is a major communication company and the primary sponsor for the premier NASCAR racing circuit.  They WANT your information because THEY WANT YOUR BUSINESS and will do what they can to get it from you by offering you lanyards, koozies and cool freebies in exchange for it.

With that said, and knowing that it’s coming…. it’s still one of the best NASCAR Camping Things to Do while you’re at the track.  Have fun and share your “Sprint Experience” photos and stories here.

Talladega Superspeedway NASCAR - Road Trip

Talladega Superspeedway
I must admit I was a little jealous when my friend called me last week to “share” the sudden plan to road trip it to attend the Talladega Superspeedway #GEICO500 and CAMP THE INFIELD with her husband.  I’m not complaining,  because I was invited to go.  In fact, they even offered to pay for the campsite and my ticket -  the only catch -  I would need to drive the RV the 2080+ miles to the track.

As much fun it sounded, I just wasn’t sold on the overall cost of fuel and last minute logistics for a 4,100 mile round trip to Alabama and back.  When I offered to just fly and meet them there, the invitation was quickly rescinded as “the tent would be too small for the three of us.”

These friends have been camping the infield at Michigan International Speedway NASCAR races for as long as I remember.  Her father was one of the volunteer fire fighters at the track over 30 years ago and they have been going ever since.

Packing the Car for the Trip
If ANYONE is the actual NASCAR Infield Camping GURU -  that would be her.  She had their ‘Dega campsite tickets ordered and received within a week of his announcement to pack the car!  She has every gadget, checklist, cooking tool and recipe you would ever need for some of the finest gourmet lunches and dinners you could eat at a race.  I’m betting she even had the trip planned down to the minute of when they would arrive at the track.  Like I said, she’s the real NASCAR Infield Camping Guru!

It was fun to watch their ‘Dega trip when they shared it on Facebook or from an occasional text message and photo.  Now I don’t know if this was an anniversary present to each other, but the timing was impeccable for them making this trip to attend the Talladega race right after their 24th wedding anniversary.  Either way, I’m happy for them for being able to celebrate 24 years together on an awesome road trip?  Congratulations!  You deserve it!

Zip Lock Baggie Omelets

If you have picky eaters at your campsite here is a quick, non-messy, very easy breakfast idea your guests can cook using a pot of boiling water on your campfire or grill that will have them creating their OWN omelets to suit THEIR taste.

Prepare you ingredients and get ready for an awesome omelet.
© Photos by Paul Wilkinson
Cooking Utensils -

1/4 size Zip Lock Freezer Bags
Pot (the larger the pot the more bags you an cook at the same time)
Tongs

Ingredients -

2 Eggs (or Substitute w/ Egg Beaters)
¼ Cup  - Shredded Cheese(s) of your choice.
¼ Cup  - Diced Meat(s) of your choice (Ham, Bacon, Sausage, etc).
¼ Cup -  Sliced veggies of your choice (Onion, peppers, mushrooms, etc.).
Seasoning or Sauce  - Salt/Pepper, Season Salt, Salsa

Meats, Cheeses and veggies can be prepped prior to heading out and placed in their own zip lock baggies and stored in your cooler or fridge until ready to use.

Directions -
  1.  Place a Pot of water on the grill or campfire and bring to a boil.
  2. Using a permanent marker, write your name on your baggie
  3. Crack open two (2) Eggs into your baggie, seal and mix until blended.
  4. Using a combination of pre-sliced, chopped & diced ingredients (meats, cheese, veggies, spices), add them to your baggie.  Close and mix together.  Do not over fill.
  5. Holding upright, squeeze out the excess air out from your bag and ensure it is completely sealed.
  6. Place bag(s) upright in uncovered pot for 13 minutes (or until eggs are cooked) using the tongs to keep the baggies upright.
  7. When done place bag on heat safe dish and carefully open (or cut top of baggie) and your omelet will slide out onto your plate.
  8. Add any seasonings, sauces or condiments and enjoy.
Pre-Cooking: Mix all you desired Meats, Cheeses & Veggies
© Photos by Paul Wilkinson
Post-Cooking: Contents will be HOT after cooking - Open Carefully.
© Photos by Paul Wilkinson
CAUTION: Contents will be extremely hot, use tongs and be careful when opening the baggie to place on your plate.

I've seen comments that the maker of "Zip Lock" bags does not recommend you use their product in this way.  Of course they probably have to say this to take the liability off their company.  However, I have found posts from people that have been making omelets this way for over 10 years.

For those of you nay-sayers who want to say cooking with plastic this way is bad for you...Bah Humbug.  Before sharing this recipe I actually made this myself.  It works AND tastes GREAT!

Season & Serve -  Eat Up!
© Photos by Paul Wilkinson
Make sure your baggie doesn't touch the hot dry part of the pot or hang over the edge, because it is still plastic, and it WILL melt if exposed to extreme heat.

Happy eating!

Autoclub Speedway Infield 2015 Site Relocations: Good News – Bad News

I was very excited to receive my ticket
package for the races.

I have mentioned in my posts about changing my infield site location at California Autoclub Speedway Section BK5 – Row 10, to a different location for the March 2015 NASCAR races.  I had decided to do this for a couple reasons;

  • It was located in an area of a slightly lower elevation making it impossible to see anything on the track.  You might catch a glimpse of a blur as they sped by on the high groove, but I was glad to have a scanner to listen to the broadcast to follow what was happening around the track.

Not much of a view of the track from on top of the RV
  •  As much as I "love" kids, the asphalt area directly in front of the site was large enough to be converted into a small skate board / bike park.  Honestly, it was like being in the middle of a “Lord of the Flies” convention, with no less than 20 kids with their bikes, skateboards, scooters, roller skates,  jump ramps, and radio controlled cars ...UGH!   My grand kids would love it, but I prefer racing engines over noisy, fighting, tattle-telling, crying kids.  Not fun!
Yep, those are just a few of the kids that were on bikes or skateboards.
* * * * * *
The Good News -  I was able to “relocate” to Section BK5 – Row 7.  Located nearer the center of the infield.  It is slightly more elevated, and by one of the main “roads” with better access to the restrooms, showers and infield store.  As a “people watcher” this is ideal.

I am not sure what kind of view of the track it has from the top of the RV yet, but I’m guessing it's better.  Sure, there may be some kids, but the road in front is not as wide as the previous location to convene a convention.

The Bad News -  After calling the ticket office over the last THREE days during this week's “relocation” period, to see if anything else had become available, there does not appear to be any other infield locations available to move to get me closer to the coveted Row 2 back stretch sites or even closer to the track in the turns.

The Great News -  It's looking like the infield for the March 2015 races will be "Sold Out".  Although there appeared to be a number of empty seats in the grandstands in 2014, the entire race was deemed to be "Sold Out" well before the green flag waved on Sunday afternoon.

The Very Bad News – If you were planning on relocating to a new site for the 2015 NASCAR race weekend at Auto Club Speedway, the only spots they were offering were down in the “Lord of the Flies” location where I just moved from.  Bottom line is chances of moving at this point may be slim-to-none.  However, this could be ideal if you have kids.

Good luck though if you decide to try and let me know how it goes.

NASCAR Driver's Names That I Find Funny!

There are some NASCAR driver's names that I find funny!  Let me start by saying some of my favorite NASCAR nicknames of the past include:  “The Intimidator” – Dale Earnhardt, “The Iceman” – Terry Labonte, “ The Rooster” – Ricky Rudd and “The King” – Richard Petty.

Then I ask - "What about some of the NASCAR driver's REAL names?".

Although it's rare that I SEE or HEAR these names, I can honestly say my maturity level drops to an age below adolescent!  Don’t get me wrong, I mean no disrespect to any of these drivers or their loyal fans.  Admittedly, my post pubescence and juvenile nature takes a serious nose dive that will often coincide with a sincere chuckle and knee slap.

Here are my top four:

Jamie Dick
Photo Credit: Jennifer Stewart / Getty Images
4.  Jamie Dick Dick started in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2011 after competing in the NASCAR Truck Series.  In 51 races, over a 4 year period, Dick has had a problem finishing towards the front.  Dick has no wins and no top 10's to his credit. Dick faced hard times with sponsors in 2013 that forced him to cut his NNS racing schedule.  In 2014, Dick has competed in 17 events (to date) and maintains a firm grasp on "last in points”  for the year.

3.  “Dick” Johnson – Came from "The Land Down Under".  An Australian driver, who spent most years on the Australian Touring Car Championship series.  Dick performed briefly in the NASCAR series in 1990, competing in seven events.  Dick’s best finish came at Pocono Raceway when he came in 22nd.  Dick raced in the first NASCAR race that was held in Australia in the 1988 Goodyear NASCAR 500, but an early wreck caused a premature end to his day.

2.  “Dick” Passwater – Raced in only 20 NASCAR events over a period of two years.  Dick finished 1st one time in the 1953 Race #5 at Charlotte Speedway's ¾ mile dirt track.  Dick retired after car owner Frank Arford died in a crash while attempting to qualify for a race.

1.  “Dick” Trickle - nicknamed the “White Knight”.   Dick started in 303 NASCAR Winston Cup Races and won “Rookie-of-the-Year” honors at age 48.  Although Dick came up short and never won a NASCAR race over the 24 years of racing , Dick was considered “the winningest short track driver in history”  in other racing circuits.  Sadly, Dick died at the age of 71 in 2013 from an apparent suicide.

Maybe it’s just a guys thing (<-- see what I just did there, again? ).  Am I the ONLY one that find some NASCAR driver's names funny or am I just being a "Boob"?

Is there a race driver whose name makes you laugh when you hear it?
